The towers of our independence leave us waiting

for our hair to grow so we can get ourselves out,

having long given up on royalty, charming

or otherwise, to save us. No. We save ourselves.

We eat alone. We seek solutions in silence.

I want to tell these women, and everyone

in this coffeehouse, on the street, in the city—

I want to tell them no one gets out alone.

No one finishes unscathed, completely self-sufficient.

We need crutches and scaffolding and white dotted lines.

Good grows in the wild, but great is carefully cultivated,

pumpkins, basil, people. Same thing.

But no one is listening.
